Part of that is driven by curiosity. Part of it is driven by ambition. For many people, it happens when they reach a stage in their career where they begin asking different questions. After years of leading teams, running business units, driving major programmes or managing significant budgets, there often comes a moment when the focus shifts from "what's my next job?" to "what else could I do with everything I've learned?"

That's often when board roles start appearing on the radar.

The challenge is that many people are intrigued by the idea of becoming a Non-Executive Director without really understanding what the role involves. Some assume boards are looking exclusively for former CEOs. Others think they need years of board experience before they can even be considered. Many believe opportunities simply appear once you've reached a certain level of seniority.

The reality is that there are a lot of misconceptions about board careers.

Interestingly, there isn't a single route into the boardroom. Some people begin with a trustee position, others join advisory boards, and some secure their first NED role while still holding demanding executive positions. We regularly meet senior professionals who have experience that could be highly valuable to organisations, yet they haven't considered how that experience might translate into a board environment.

And that's where the conversation starts to become interesting.

Boards exist to support, challenge and oversee organisations. They help shape strategy, consider risk, navigate change and provide perspective that executive teams may not always have internally. The opportunity to contribute at a different level is exactly what makes board work so appealing.

It's also why more executives are beginning to think about board careers much earlier than they might have done a generation ago.

Of course, once people start exploring the idea, the questions quickly follow. What does a Non-Executive Director actually do? What are boards looking for when they appoint someone? How important is sector experience? Do you need an existing network? And perhaps most importantly, how do you know whether a board role would genuinely be right for you?

We're having these conversations with every day with senior leaders who are curious about the next stage of their career. Some are actively considering board appointments, while others are simply exploring their options and trying to understand what opportunities might exist beyond traditional executive leadership.
