Cut Roses no longer smell – our client fixes that!

Breeding Roses to improve their look after shipping has virtually eliminated their beautiful smell. Our client has created a novel, patented technology for adding fragrance and value to unscented roses.

Founded by a skilled florist and an experienced inventor/entrepreneur, their vision is to license their technology to growers, importers and retailers around the world and to enhance consumers' enjoyment of the roses they buy or are given.

Most cut roses are bred for robustness rather than scent, and whilst attractive, they lack the key ingredient of fragrance which consumers want.

It is not simply a case of spraying scent onto rose heads, as this would stain the petals and devalue the flowers. Our Clients patented treatment is designed not to stain petals whilst remaining invisible to the consumer and lasting for 6 days or more.

This treatment can be profitably applied both at source to cut stems before they are shipped and sold to the £3.3BN global market in Europe, North America and Europe, or by the distributor / retailer before sale. It can be applied economically either manually or by using automated machinery.

In the UK unscented rose stems sell for between 39p to £1.66 per stem whilst scented roses can sell for up to £6.50 per stem. Adding scent to quality unscented roses allows them to be sold at higher prices and profit whilst the total cost of treating a single rose is approximately only 0.7p.

Our client will fill the gap in the cut rose market between unscented low-price roses and expensive high price roses by creating a new market of Branded scented roses between the two positions. Its high added value at moderate extra cost will allow them to rapidly capture market share: those without the treatment will lose to those with it.

They will license their technology to rose growers, importers and retailers globally, creating a highly profitable and sustainable, royalty-based and IP protected business.

Latest Developments:

  • Their contract manufacturer has recently successfully manufactured and delivered the third treatment samples with specially tailored rose scent.
  • Scent approved as correctly matching that of natural red roses
  • Commercial discussions underway with machinery manufacturer for supply to customers globally
