Non-Executive Director (Non Exec) is required for an innovative company who are exploiting two linked innovations in the field of propulsion, in particular marine propulsion, based in Surrey.

We are looking for candidates with:

  • entrepreneurial flair
  • experience of start-ups and successfully growing a business
  • team player
  • experience in Intellectual Property (IP) and patents would be an advantage but not essential
  • experience of, or interest, in sailing, rowing and/or boating would be an advantage but not essential

The successful candidate will be expected to work between 2-3 days per month for the company and maybe more in the early stages. Remuneration will be in the region of £5-6K per annum, which will be reviewed.

The Non Exec should be willing to invest £17.5k + for equity and to align the interests with the existing Directors who have all invested. The focus in the early stages will be on preserving cash and growing the business.

1. The Company and its market:

  • The company, which is SEIS registered (enabling a 50% tax concession on investments), has been formed to exploit two linked innovations in the field of marine propulsion. These innovations provide significant and valuable improvements to the performance of:
  1. Propellers for marine transportation
  2. Oars for rowing boats. 
  3. Other non-marine, blade-based devices such as impellers and turbines
  • There are approximately 100,000 large marine vessels with propellers. 50,000 oars are purchased annually and other blade based devices such as impellers and turbines are found in numerous applications and number many millions sold per year.
  • The propeller and oar innovations are based on the same, sound new science which is contained in two patent applications owned by the company. A well-known University has established proof of concept for the oar innovation and another University has established proof of concept for the propeller innovation. Trials to further prove the technology are about to commence with both universities and will be complete within the next 4 to 6 months. Complete success is expected.
  • The company are working with one of the top three oar manufacturers in the world and also with two leading UK propeller manufacturing companies, known for their innovation.
  • There is big potential for the technology with major propeller companies around the world as part of the technology roll out.
  • Our client will own the patents and make its money by licensing the technology to oar and propeller companies worldwide.
  • The CEO and founder has extensive experience in engineering, technology development, general management, licensing, innovation and start-ups. A Chairman and two experienced Non Execs have been appointed and have invested. The company now requires a fourth Non Exec/Investor to complete the team.

 2. Non-Exec Director requirements:

The ideal candidate will have the following credentials:

  1. Successful background in establishing and growing a business and providing entrepreneurial leadership of the business;
  2. Experience of start-ups;
  3. Able to supplement the skills and experience of the existing Directors, to ensure the success of the business and help to oversee the strategy and successful roll-out of the technology;
  4. Ability to work within a developing team;
  5. Willing and able to invest £17.5k+;
  6. Experience in Intellectual Property (IP) and patents would be an advantage;
  7. Experience of, or interest, in sailing, rowing and/or boating would be an advantage.
